I have used 200 pitch (.2") belts to drive a high
precision optical scanner which was powered by a servo
motor with 1000 count incremental encoder. I tried
several other appraoches before I used the belt
because I expected cogging and backlash. Reluctantly I
turned to the belts. I made a fixture to measure any
irregularities such as those I mentioned above and
found to my surprise that it was completely free of
inaccuracies including dynamic lag such as you might
get from a rubber coupling. It went into production
and worked very well. We were able to move the motor
to set the tension so we didn't need an idler. You
need to do it this way also, or use a rigid idler, not
one that is sprung. We used ordinary 200 pitch belts,
probably from Stock Drive Products.
