As far as I understand it, and I admit to being naïve about such things, the
problem with belts, wires, chain etc... is that you need to gear down to
drive them if you want decent resolution. The gears introduce backlash, and
you're back where you started.???

I see these as non-contact type machine. plasma, water, even PCB type
machines.
