It's my understanding that 4-phases just means that there are 4 separate
windings in the motor.
A) If you connect them in 2 series pairs, you get, in effect, a 2-phase,
center-tapped motor.
B) If you connect them in 2 parallel pairs, you also get a 2-phase
motor.
C) You can also run them as 2-phase motors using only 2 of the windings.
The unused leads should, in any case, be insulated.
I'm using some 8-wire motors on my mill, wired up per C) above. I drive
them with Gecko 201's.

Can someone confirm for me that series or parrellel connections of
steppers is in fact the same thing as two or four phase? I came across
some steppers that are claimed to be 4 phase, however I've been told
that you can also set them up as 2 phase? They are 8 wire unit's in a
Nema 34 frame. The documentation also claims a Dielectric strength of
500Vdc, whats that??
Thanks
