I came across some steppers that are claimed to be 4 phase, however I've been told that you can also set them up as 2 phase? They are 8 wire unit's in a Nema 34 frame. The documentation also claims a Dielectric strength of 500Vdc, whats that??

There really is no "four phase" stepper. This was a terrible
nomenclature goof that came about when unipolar drive was
common, and there were four transistors hooked to the motor.
4 transistors = 4 phases. But, that is not really true, each pair
of transistors drove the same phase, for + and - polarity.
So, they were also 2-phase drives operating 2-phase steppers.

Series or parallel connection is not the same thing as unipolar
vs. bipolar drive. 8-wire motors are the most versatile, but they
are also the most confusing. And, wiring them up wrong can damage
the driver. 500 V is quite an unusual rating for a stepper. That
means the insulation on the windings can withstand 500 V between
the windings and ground.
