Alternative Linux for EMC?

on 2000-06-27 13:09:52 UTC
Hi to the list,

Here's a mail from a friend up in Washington State who's up on Linux,
and starting on CNC. He's been trying to get me into Linux for several
years. Any comments? Will EMC like SuSE?

Hi Al,

I switched from RedHat Linux to Caldera then to SuSE. SuSE Linux v6.4
(Linux kernel
version 2.2.14) is pretty easy to install. Their system admin tool,
YAST2, makes it
easy to set up. Some of the xwindows monitor configuration issues are
taken care of
for you during the install. I have a K6-2/450mhz machine with a 20gb
IDE hard drive
for my ham station machine. If you install everything, it will take over
6gb of disk
to hold everything. Depending on whether or not you are going to use
that machine
for just CNC stuff or general do everything with it will determine how
much you
install. I have another machine with a minimal install I was trying to
set up for my
tcp/ip ham networking before giving up on that machine for other
hardware reasons, I
successfully loaded Linux on a 2.1gb scsi HD.

If you get a chance, look at our web site and check out the prototype
development
pictures. Got 22 pics from pool testing of the new unit. Last pic shows
the display
housing. Works neat. We are working on battery boxes to contain the
C-Cell Lithium
batteries (3v ea x2 x2 subsystems) that go inside the unit. We will also
be
redesigning the hose couplings going into the lid. CNC stuff so far on
this are
battery housings, display housings, hose tee couplings and a diluent
addition valve
that is on the front of the left counterlung. The dil add valve is a
second stage of
a scuba regulator with a new body to adapt to our needs. We milled that
body with the
exception of the front piece that screws on and contains the diaphram
and purge
button.

Another subject, I have on order an Icom IC-706MkIIG radio along with
their antenna
tuner. That will become my new base station. I still gotta get going on
the code so
I can finish my General upgrade.

Gotta run.
