Bob, [and others, I won't reply to each individually but let my say thanks
for all your input!]
I've got a fairly decent idea now of what is required to build my power
supply. Thanks for the link to your PDF, its very well written and
informative. I've also read your part 1 section of building a power supply
and was wondering if you have had time to do the other 'parts' to the
write-up? I've looked at a couple of sugested sites here in Canada and
think I should easily have all my needs met with these.
Also about the steppers, I'm wondering why the 4.5v steppers aren't the best
way to go? Their complete ratings are as follows;
Unipolar= 3.2v @ 4.5A
Bipolar[series]=4.5v @ 3.2A
Bipolar [parrellel]=2.3v @ 6.3A
The only reason I was interested in these units is the reasonable price as
well as they have dual shafts at 1/2" dia.
They are rated to produce 637oz-in holding torque [ well the uni side is a
bit less than this]. I'm building a fairly large and heavy system and would
like the max amount of power out of these units and this is why I was
looking to run my Gecko's as high as I could. I've love even more powerfull
units however I don't think the 1300oz-in level of steppers would run at
their rated power on Gecko's due to limit's set by them for power
connections.
One last question. Somplace I read that Gecko recommends we only use 65-70%
of the steppers rated amp's as the required current from our power supply.
In my case w/ the above spec's 3.2 x 4 steppers =12.8a x 0.70=8.96A. I
can't seem to find that pc of info now to double check my memory. Can anyone
confirm this?
Again, thanks for the great supply of info, you've all been a great help in
presenting the options.
