[You make a good point. I could see this would be a problem with a wall
that runs straight up vertically higher than the cutting length of your
toolbit. For a more contoured part it wouldn't come up, though, since you
are usually carving away the stuff you'd run into with the wider part of
your shank, and this was evidently the sort of thing the programmers had in
mind. I think the idea was to make the thing as simple as possible, but the
trade-off is that it can't take every situation into account. It is
possible to get straight unreduced 1/8" carbide ball-nose cutters in a 4"
length, which have about an inch of cut length. While I would be cautious
about using these for steel, they seem to work okay on softer materials. If
you want to use Mill-wizard, getting one of these might help. It will
generate a roughing pass based on the specified cutting length of your
toolbit- I use a 1/4" x 6" straight carbide cutter for roughing, which has
been long enough to keep me out of trouble...]
