Xylotex Magic Smoke all gone............

Just dug out my Sherline lathe after being in storage for a while.
Everything checks out right, but the Magic Smoke came out.

The software, current, Vcc, Vbb are all exactly the same as they were in the
past, nothing was changed from when it was working to the testing now. No
plugs or wiring changed.

I am using a Switching power supply, and turning it on after the software is
running and stabilized, and the 5 volts is applied to the drives.

Should I be switching the output instead? Should there be any capacitors
across the output of the supply, or the input of the Xylotex's?
Any help suggestions appreciated.
