i never tried this but i like all the ideas.
small tooling is different than big, as rotational
diameters approach closer to zero. for tiny cutters
you do not need a lot of torque, but to get any
reasonable amount of material removed in any
reasonable time you do need speed.
what the owner of a big mill tells you may or may not
apply at all to the tiny scale. a grasshopper can leap
100 times his length, but an elephant can't even hop.
it looks to me not unreasonable to use a taig lathe to
make a homemade 50k rpm spindle because your spindle
mass will be exponentially smaller for tiny cutters.
the r/c motor on a tiny spindle looks good to me.
note that heating and preloading issues appear to be
absent by design (by the drawing i saw) in this
because the thrust bearings aren't at opposite ends of
a rod that heats and contracts.
(taig and sherline take note: problem of excess
bearing load due to heat is absent by design. paul did
it; you can too)
skinnier spindles are more flexible? sure. but it's
the .004 cutter that is gonna be what gives long
before any side loading bends your spindle.
[disclaimer- no financial interest, etc...it just
looks like a well studied solution to me.]
