I drive half the windings on the little (1A per phase) stepper on my lathe.
I found it gave me the best top speed in my application, I probably lost
some torque down low, but I don't notice it.
Increasing the supply voltage (I run 24V) would have caused major thermal
headaches in other parts of my setup.
