Most people would be happy with building a 10 to 50 watt cutter. That
is the power level where things are relatively cheap. I would like to
get a 200 watt system eventually and try some thin steels, but right
now paper, acrylic, fabrics, rubber and wood are quite fun to cut. I
have a large cnc mill, but some things are just a bit hard to do on a
mill. For instance, I challenge anyone to cut out that denim gear on
their cnc mill or plasma cutter. :-)
If a group starts up, let me know. I would like share my experiences
with CO2 lasers.
