The G-rex is a sort of super breakout board. As well as having 16
digital inputs and 16 digital outputs it also generates the step pulses
in hardware producing a much smoother pulse stream than Mach3 can on
it's own. If you are using steppers a smoother pulse stream equates to
more available torque and less chance of lost steps. Instead of the
parallel port it uses a network connection.
How long is it likely to take you to put your lathe together? If it is
nearly ready to go then you may be better off using two Campbell
breakout boards. If it is likely to be a few months before it is ready
then you are probably better off going for the G-Rex. MachIV is in beta
at the moment but from all accounts it is progressing fast .
