The question is not IF you can. but what is gained or lost ?

If you check out MPJA, they have some nice NEMA23, double stack pretty
cheap.

What do you want to do with the machine ? speed is not all that
important on a small machine, but power is. if you use pulleys, you
can get more delivered power on the screw. Also, on that size machine,
a 1/4-28 stainless screw from McMaster will be less than $5.00 I
think. more TPI means even more delivered power.
