Lol. I love the positive attitude.
Love them or hate them, Microsoft has done more to unify and standardize the
PC than any other company. I'd even say they've done more than all the rest
combined.
Let's judge the product on its merits rather than our preconceived notions
based on all-too-common misconceptions.
My PCs have never been hacked, I haven't had a computer virus since a DOS
boot sector virus around 1991, and my Microsoft two servers have only had to
be rebooted to install updates (even with that, they've been running for
months between reboots, and that's with crappy leftover desktop-quality
hardware)
In the interest of full disclosure, I work for a Microsoft partner, and have
been working almost exclusively with MSFT technology since 1991. I've worked
closely with MSFT, and I've also had the opportunity to see what IBM has
done at some clients promoting "free" and "open source" with an enormous
price tag.
I can already control my model trains using Microsoft-based devices.
Controlling robots looks to be even more exciting :-)

"Common software platform" means something you have to pay Microsoft
a hefty fee to use.
EMC, of course, already supports any form of robot, with any combination
of linear
and rotary axes you desire.
I'm not sure what flavor/level of robotics they are interested in, but
I'm sure the
makers of industrial robots who have a 30-year head start are not too
worried.
