I will lob one more thought in here. I really like Ballendo's
thought of using a DRO scale to do it. It turns out these are
really cheap these days, even if you need to just buy one. Check
eBay out. You'd only need one scale to calibrate your axes one at a
time. I just finished adapting some cheap scales for my X and Z
(Quill) on my IH Mill because I wanted a quick DRO until I get
around to a CNC conversion. Didn't want to spend a lot and was able
to buy all 3 scales for under $200. You can read more about it
here, but it would be a really simple project:

I had kind of thought it would come in handy to help calibrate the
CNC system in some way such as tracking down lost steps, but it had
not occured to me to use it for leadscrew correction.
