Machine builders: Latest tech briefs has a motion control insert.
http://www.techbriefs.com/motion/index.html
Software guys: If you go to applications, you'll see an article,
"Software Technology Links Motion Control to PC-based System". This
article is about VxWin, a real-time extension that lets you do real
deal timing under Windows XP. Could save a year of development time
making a parallel port work, or so I hear.
Of course now you have to pay Wind River as well as Microsoft, but
it'll save you some device driver hacking and reprogramming system
timers. Who knows, maybe now that real-time extensions for Linux are
really working right Wind River might become less agressive than
Microsoft allowing a reasonably priced product (let me know so I can
stop holding my breath).
