That's correct in the UK as well. I used to repair quite a few heidenhain
TNC controllers a few years ago. Our biggest problem was usually blown
serial port interfaces where shops would fail/refuse to use any isolated, or
otherwsies protected RS232 interfaces. PC's in one room with one mains
supply, machines on another, serial cables wrapped with the three phase and
grounds that floated with quite a few volts and spiked all over the place.
With these and other faults our biggest problem was replacing IC's that were
no longer available, or at least not in small quantities from the old stock
specialists.
In the UK the control or monitor were £450 to £550 each standard fee. When I
could get the chips it was an hour and £1 for the chip. Trouble was once you
had started sending these controllers in for repair they seemed to barely
have a 12 month life before they were dead again.

Heidenhain had at one time a very low flat fee to fix older controls.
I learned this when one of my customers asked me to repair a
Heidenhain control. I called Heidenhain and, at that time (3 - 4
years ago), they quoted a flat fee of about $500.00 if the control was
sent to them to fix anything that was wrong. I advised my customer to
send their control to Heidenhain as I would end up billing them more
in onsite costs to repair the control.

Here is the contact information I have:

Hope this helps,

Jim
