Thanks for all the fine advice. I did find out what the problem was.

The lathe plugs into the "Might Drive" main box and is turned on and
off by the control box. While the spindle was running I watched the
steppers and notice the X was jumping steps when it was not supposed
to be moving. I unplugged the lathe spindle motor from the control
unit and plugged it in the wall and the X stepper stopped jumping.

Since the spindle was feeding off the controller the same as the
steppers, the current supplying the spindle was somehow feeding back
on the stepper signal causing it to jump.

So there you have it. A 6 month problem fixed so I can stop tearing
my hair out. :) Thanks again for your help all.
