That's a bit like those magnetic drills.

Like a drill press, but an electromagnet in the base. Place on metal, turn
on magnet, drill hole, turn off magnet, repeat.

You actually don't need a lot of power to make the electromagnet work.

So long as the table is lighter than what you're cutting, why not?
