One other thing, in what type of application do you intend to use the
transformers? As mentioned by someone else on the list, when you rectify the AC
from the transformer, the DC output from the rectifier would be greater even
allowing for loss within the rectifying diodes. Also, you need to make certain
that the VA rating of the transformer will supply enough current for your
application. Of course, all of this may be something about which you are
already aware.
I agree with one of the group members that mentioned the extra wire sounds
more like a center tap than a ground, that makes sense as in many applications
12 VDC is needed and if you center tapped the 28 VAC output from the
transformer, rectified it and allowed for the load then you would get unregulated 12
VDC which is used in many cases for limit switches, or other sensing devices.
Can you send a picture of the transformer to me, if you still need help.
