This migh be an urban legend, but I've been told that the CO2 (10.2um)
will be absorbed by the cornea/lens, and the lens of the eye can be
replaced with an artificial lens...(how does ackomodation work then?)
A YAG (1064nm) beam will go through the cornea/lens and burn the retina,
which can't be replaced (yet ;)

still, it's best to wear safety glasses. the good ones are OD 9-10 at
1064nm.
