The problem with reprap and machines similar to it is that they work
like a printer or plotter i.e. within a box.
However "Thinking outside the box" is a phrase that could have a lot of
potential for this application.
A lathe can work on larger pieces of material than itself, and the other
day I saw the carvewrigtht machine working (a cnc woodworking machine
that is like a printer, but can work on much larger pieces of wood).
The resultant machine would just need to be able to make components
larger than its own physical size.
