http://www.geckodrive.com/product.cfm?pid=10 or
http://www.geckodrive.com/product.cfm?pid=13? Is a product like the
ones at http://pminmo.com/forsale/blankpcbs.htm a component?
If it is not a violation of the plagiarism policy (check with the
school, it may be considered plagiarism to use examples in data
sheets), look at PMinMO http://www.pminmo.com/ and there are numerous
breakout boards and driver boards with the designs in the public
domain. If your instructor requires you to do your own design with
no reference to examples and manuals, you are screwed (because EMC2,
and probably MACH3 already have given the design specs and
examples.) If not, and the instructor believes that it is okay to
use manufacturers data and application information, but not example
circuit boards, you have a layout task.
The point is that the instructor has probably never been asked
exactly what a component is, if the definition given can be used to
define a commercially available PCB, go ahead and buy it, just
assemble it yourself, if the definition allows you to use potted
modules, use them, but get the component definition witnessed by
others or in writing so "That's not what I said!" will be untrue, but
"That's not what I meant!" gets you the option of asking for a new
total pass at the project with an extension to match the original,
rather than a failing grade.
