It’s a big Avon, bigger than a BP much more rigid, much heavier and the
motors are what came with it.

The motors normally fetch over £1000 each second hand, so they are that
bullet proof I’d like to keep then.

I did look at dropping the voltage and running gecko’s or something similar,
but if I run then up at 80V, they don’t sound half as good as they do with
160V, and yes I know that’s no real reasoning, but really if groups are
selling HV servo cards, they should be as reliable as the 80V ones. There
are actually more complaints out on news groups about gecko’s than rutex.

What size mill do you have that you need these monster motors?
Even a BP Series 2 will run just fine with 28 in-lb continuous
torque motors with a 2:1 ratio.
Gecko's will run these motors just fine although you will sacrafice
speed due to the 80v limit. Ron Rogers runs this size motors on his
BP using Gecko's- in a commercial enviroment. He seems to not have
any problems.
I am not suggesting using Gecko's, just making a point that a
drive rated much lower voltage and current will run those motors.
