I am not a Linux guru, merely a seeker <GRIN>. It sounds like you
have a permissions problem.

WARNING, this is dangerous! You can do a SUDO SU and then give YOUR
password. This makes you the root user for that terminal session.

Look at permissions and see what is "funky", sometimes a CHMOD 777
will help, if memory serves.
