Hi Afogassa,
Sounds good, although I haven't studied an ink jet printer for a while.
A stepper and driver would be easy to do. An EAS board
http://www.embeddedtronics.com/
Uses a PIC micro, and a little more code could be added to it to make it
do your "canned" move. The Cybernetic Microsystems CY545 stepper motor
controllers could also generate the steps. As could a simple PIC to
generate steps for most any driver.
