Binary with a text header as per the link. If you download the demo
of Rhino4 you can create them yourself upto 30 times. But beware that
Rhino seems to be doing something a little weird, I've posted to
their news group so perhaps they will fix it.

They are more like a print head I thought with multiple nozzles?

That is basically how laminated object modelling works except they use
layers of paper and a laser. They dice the support regions so they
can be knocked off later.
