I did not put ballscrews on my X and Y axes, and they do
remarkably well, for the abuse the machine has seen (90 IPM
demos at NAMES show for several years, etc.) There are a few
options for pretty much turnkey CNC kits that are considerably
less than $3000.

I tend to do a lot of larger stuff, and my retrofit reduced my
Bridgeport Y travel to 7", and I run into that a lot. I have a
bunch of Bridgeport BOSS casting parts that I'm reconditioning
to get my Y travel back, and then some. That involves replacing
the whole knee of the Bridgeport, but it will be worth it.
