Ron has me all excited, jabbering and going through old files. A decade back I created a cake/cookie/brownie decorator head to go on a simple 2.5D computerized engraver. I still have it, as it's actually a very useful industrial dispenser. Some of the wonderful discoveries at that time included the availability of rice paper (aka wafer paper) which is edible and water soluble, so I could decorate the edible rice paper and at any time apply it to a plain iced cake. Nice flat surface for the art to come out of the icer/engraver, no need to worry about dispense height issues if the cake sinks.
Then I discovered perfectly clear, edible (in some FDA approved grades) water soluble plastic film, commonly called "Solvy" and used as an embroidery backing. Same application, nice glossy cakes. No no no no, don't get confused, I dispensed the vector icing patterns onto it, you don't get stitches in your tongue.
These methods were so much more appealing than the edible inkjet printed paper cake decorations of which there are a zillion available as standard products (SweetArt, KopyCake ...). Dimensionality, actual taste, recognition as the classic cake-decorator's art, were all of a high standard. And in any case, if you just print your photo on a cake, comebody will put a knife through your eye and spoil your birthday.
But the best thing was discovering pre-mixed colored icing in tubs at the supermarket, that I could load easily into my syringes. The syringe method works fine, unlike elegant solder-paste dispensers which are typically valved directly at the nozzle, syringes with floating piston seal respond quite cleanly to compressed air on/off and don't dribble.
Oh, some advice, when you go into the lab supply store to buy a supply of 60 milliliter syringes for the various colors of icing in the dispenser, always shave first, try not to look shifty, avoid shaking and scratching during the transaction.

Its in an old mill in Brunswick Maine, in a great small company started
by a couple women in their kitchen. They make the most amazing brownies
Ive ever eaten.
