A friend built a machine that big using chain. On X, he used it a bit like a
rack and pinion set up with it looped over sprockets at each end of the
gantry. Said sprockets being on a common shaft.. On Y he used a loop.
Works well, and may be cheaper than belts at that scale. You still need to
gear down the drive though.

Thanks for the amazing amount of info. I guess I would probably be
barking up the wrong tree using wire drive for a 4' x 5' router bed?
