I was considering using a drum that would have 6 to 10 turns of the
rope around it. Then drive the drum with a stepper, either geared
down using a short timing belt, or I got an idea from CNC zone on
driving the drum using another several turns of wire rope around it
and then wrapped around a smaller shaft that would be coupled to the
stepper (sort of a wire rope reduction pulley). It is all sounding a
little to extensive to engineer correctly and hope to get satisfactory
results, I think I will go with ballscrews.

I will probably use wire rope to stabilize my X axis with a
rope/pulley combination to lock the two sides so they remain square to
each other, rather than drive each individually. This is where you
tie the linear slide in an X pattern.
