Installing Ubuntu is easy when you already have a version of linux on it
- forget the usb.
Download the Ubuntu ISO image to hard drive.
- uncompress it (optional, but recommended)
Mount it.
Start the install.
In the install process, it will notice the existing one, and give you
options.
It will happily live on another partition.
The usb may or may not work, impossible to say.
It depends on everything, bios, machine, motherboard, settings and luck.
It is almost certainly possible (95% prob) and almost certainly
difficult (90% prob).
... This is based on my having managed and run 100´s of servers and
workstations on linux over last 10 years ...
