Actually, the ounces are different too. The US gallon is 1/6 less (16.6667% approx.) than the Imperial gallon.
There is a 6:5 ratio of the gallon sizes, and a 5:4 ratio in the number of corresponding ounces in each, so the ounces themselves are in a 24:25 ratio, i.e. the Imperial ounce is about 4% smaller.

Um, blame the folks who landed at Plymouth for the short-changed Americans - the US Gallon is 20 percent smaller than the Imperial gallon (ditto the quart), having 128 oz. vs 160. Something about wine gallons vs. beer gallons.
