Since you have similar problems with two different drives, you
might start looking at the encoder itself. I have repaired a
number of servo motors that had bad encoders, for one reason or
other, from the code disc being wiped out to getting gear lube
all over the insides. What Dan may have been referring to is
axial loads applied to the motor shaft may have crashed the
encoder disc into the read head, damaging the optical track.

One simple test you can do is command the motor to rotate
slowly, maybe 60 RPM, at a constant speed. Mark the shaft with
a marker pen. If it makes a "hitch" at the same spot every
turn, it is a strong indication the encoder has a "bad spot".
