Jon thanks again.I appreciate your advice and got nothing against using the Gorton. Yes most of what I would use it for is steel and some alum.I did download the Mach files but have not read them yet. and will check the EMC2. I have been all over the net for several days. It seems outside of buying a high dollar complete system from the site you are on. You are lost as everyone you are looking at is the one you have got to have. Like you look at stepper motors. As I want some power BUT I do not need to go 400 IPM. I like to take things slow and not break anything if I can help it. then the other thing is they never tell you what you need for a complete system or what kind controller .programs etc you need to make everything work. That is why I was hunting for a good book. Then to top it off they will not answer your emails etc.Smile frustrating but I do not intend to give up.
Jon this is a joke but true.you can find how to build a fighter jet easier than how to build a CNC machine.Smile.
Jon thanks again and if you think of anything that might help I would appreciate it. Whitey

Hydraulic tracer mills are a nightmare I wouldn't wish on an enemy.
There were some electronic tracers, but they were quite rare.
Anyway, a 3-axis CNC is a lot more flexible than a tracer, and anyway,
with CNC, you can always tweak the dimensions a little to get the part
to come out exactly right, much easier than sahving a hair off your
tracer pattern.

I'm not sure any of the hobby-level CNC programs are "conversational",
although EMC2 and Mach have some of these features.
I have a bunch of little programs that write the G-code I need for a
number of the most common operations, and I use that for most of my work.

I got it at his auction years ago when he went out of business.I threw away all the old stuff (and the mice)smile and used it as a manual mill (it is still like new) I did leave all the motor mounts etc and still have all the belt pulleys etc.

But, the stiffness and power might be way too low for gun and car parts
from hard materials. Really, it likely will cost less to convert a
larger machine than to buy a small machine and convert it properly. If
you already have a working machine with ballscrews, I think it is a
prime candidate!

I have a fairly decent Bridgeport, and I couldn't imagine making all
sorts of stuff I do on a smaller machine.
