Yes, those were certainly a mechanical nightmare, all pneumatic
controls, no electronics at all.
The joke was they'd still work after the Russians nuked the place and
all the electronics quit.
I'm surprised it wouldn't hold .003" tolerances, but it did have
PNEUMATIC linear encoders, with plates with holes in them.
As the plates slid past each other, different holes lined up, encoding
the position. I don't know what the basic resolution of those encoders
were, though. I'd guess they might be a bit coarse by today's standards.
