Hi John:
Your IDEA of having the scales and the encoder of the same or multipale units of division I think may work. In the past the idea of one system matching or checking the other gave problems of the drive unit hunting to find the right position. Good luck. The CNC workshop will be in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Check out the Digital Machinist site for information as they are running the show.
