The thought crossed my mind of using it for a spindle motor. A servoed
spindle motor with brake would have some advantages. Also
thought about using it for y axis drive on mill where the y axis weighs
several hundred lbs and needs some serious power for
acceleration.

Dave,

If your mill has a real heavy table/knee ( say series 2 Bp ) doing z axis
duty, you may need a large motor. Not as big as the one you scored perhaps
but larger than a Nema 23 ;)
