If you have components on both sides of the board, this doesn't work so
well.
There is also selective soldering, where a tiny solder fountain can be moved
under the board, and runs down the rows of pins. But, there is a lot of
set-up
and fine tuning on these systems. The soldering robot is slower, but I
suspect
it is nearly foolproof, and even when tuning it up, the few defects can be
fixed in a minute. When a wave soldering machine or selective solder
doesn't work well, it can make a colossal mess, with huge icicles of solder
all over the place, or boards that fall off and get dunked into the
solder bath.
