I'm not THAT old, but I have taken apart one of those 9V alkaline batteries.
They are also made up of tiny little individual cells (6 x 1.5V each, I
think). Could be separated and used for some nice little project.

All they are is a bunch of small cells in series. No other way to get there
unless electrochemistry has suddenly changed.
