Gents,

XL and smaller cog belts can be bought in continuous lengths. If you can
find steel or kevlar belted versions, perhaps a nice system can be made.
Anchor one end of the belt securely, the other end with a small spring to
give constant tension. If the encoder has fine enough a resolution, one can
do the conversion for any pulley diameter. Come to think of it, a lot of
smaller dot matrix printers used this sytem....
