Hi Doug,

This system was used on old drawing boards of course (remember them??) and I
have used it on a small gear cutter I made. The only problem is that the
width of the pulley has to increase in proportion to the total length of
travel and so, for a large machine, could finish up at a couple of inches or
so. The end pulleys wouldn't necessarily have to be 'threaded' as they could
be made to simply slide along a fixed shaft (this was the method I used and
it worked OK)
