I've done a lot of these dedicated machines with stepper drives, 555 oscillator and a counter to control the end point. The cheapest programmable counter I've noticed is the Automation Direct unit with dual outputs. That's handy if you want to slow the frequency generator at the end of the process.

I've always used Red Lion counters in the past but I would go for this new one for future projects. I have something like this on my big metal lathe driving the lead screw for smooth and controllable cuts where I don't want to set up the change gears just for one operation.
