Bridgeport Boss steppers

Hello group
In searching the archives for advise on updating the controls on a Bridgeport Boss CNC mill, I found differing opinions regarding the usefulness of the original stepper motors. Les Newell stated that he had "no end of problems" until he replaced his, while Marv Frankel reported that gecko 203's drove the original ones just fine.
While it seems clear that new motors would improve performance, if possible I would prefer to hold off on that expense until I could use the machine to make the money to buy them. Has anybody besides Marv found the original steppers to be satisfactory, if only as a temporary measure?
TIA
Steve
