A friend has a CNC flamecutter/plasma cutter table that is driven by rack
and pinion. It is large enough to cut 4' x 8' panels and uses 135 in/oz NEMA
23 motors to direct drive the pinions. If I remember correctly it will
easily do 200 ipm. No NEMA 42 motors required.

You may want to look at the 5 amp chopper driver controller kit that Dan
Mauch at Camtronics ( http://www.seanet.com/~dmauch/ ) offers. It may not be
as sophisticated as the Superior drive, but it does a great job and the 3
axis kit is only $225.
