Machinekit is a fork of LinuxCNC and runs great on the BeagleBone.  The BeagleBone has two additional CPUs specifically designed for real time speedup, and step generators have been implemented in them.  I sell a "cape" for the BeagleBone called the CRAMPS, that can mount up to 6 Pololu-style stepper driver modules plus other functions mostly aimed at 3D printers.  it makes a VERY small CNC control platform.

I'll have one at the CNC Workshop in Detroit next week (although that won't do you much good in the UK).
