I've got all this stuff sitting around, but before I start on one I'm
curious if there's more to these than meets the eye. In terms of the
geometry of motor size/weight/rpm and spring size/placement, is there
anything critical, or should a tinkerer be able to do this with a minmum
of trial and error? Has anyone here built a decent capacity vibratory
tumbler?

Jon,
I went out and bought 6 of Dillon Precisions large vibratory mills. They
are dirt cheap compared to my 2 Raytec units. The lower bearing needs to be
lock-tited in with the Dillon units or you will have rapid bearing bore
failure in the lower endbell casting. Other than that, they even sound the
same for about 60% less. I use a rock tumbler style machine with abrasive
plastic triangles for heavier deburring. For GONZO deburring, I use ceramic
media. Leave stuff in too long, it disappears :)

PS, they used to sell a kit that used to use a coffee can hanging from a
bungee cord. You screwed the motor with eccentric weight onto the bottom of
the can, fired it up and presto! I doubt it could be sold now with OSHA and
lawyers........
