Jan,
I'm with the selenium rectifer guys on this one. And if correct,
putting a modern rectifier in place of the selenium WOULD cause the
output to increase. And cause coil overheating. As previously
mentioned, selenium has a higher drop. We used to see this on old
Tektronics O-scopes (Circa Tek 545 era)
The seleniums would go bad, and you ALWAYS put dropping resistors in
with the new style replacement diodes.
Otherwise, the suggestions in your post are usually good advice!

Why? When "new" is surely cheaper, and clearly BETTER! If something
is
running hot, it is NOT because the replacement you used is causing
it!
Probably, whatever causes the overheating (IF "over"!) is what caused
the old
rectifier to blow! Do some more checking and testing before imagining
that
an "old exact" is better! It almost-surely IS NOT!!!!!!!!!!!
