EMC is capable of running a hexapod. Dave Anderson ran the cable
controlled unit at NAMES this last year. You can see photos of the show
including one hexapod shot at:

If I understand correctly there is an experimental unit running in
Germany and a couple of folk are working on a second generation calculator
for hexapod kinematics. NIST has completed the full 6 axis g-code
interpreter and Fred Proctor indicated yesterday that they plan full 6
axis motion planning asap.
That means that you will have a low-cost control that will run a hexapod.
It will include xyz roll pitch and yaw. There is also provision for a
number of different Stewart Platform configurations.
When the 6 axis is ready, I have a fab shop here that is talking about
building a flame table with a 20x20x6 foot work envelope. Flame and laser
cutting would work great with the cable system.
