Hi JJ,

You might have that reversed. Most unipolar steppers have the windings
tied together, making them unusable in bipolar mode. 6-wire steppers
can usually be used as 4-wire bipolar steppers, although the inductance
is higher, and the torque curve is not as good on the "serial
connection" as in the "parallel connection".
